In the QA Session it was confirmed that you will be able to play through the story with a friend.
Tiy went on to elaborate that help from friends will at times be very helpful.
There are times you will have to actively carry NPCs off of a planet, and with your hands full you wont be able to use your guns. So your friends will really need to help you.
