Weapons are going to use a procedural generation system to create an incredibly diverse variety.

We have a procedural item system that produces items on the fly.
I've got the rocket launcher stuff open right now, and there are MILLIONS of combinations of rocket launcher.
The game even procedurally generates the graphic used for the guns, right now there are 21,000 different visual styles for rocket launcher.
Then each of those styles can be coloured individually.
By release time, there will be many, many more.
And that's just for rocket launcher.

Weapons will be generated by combining a few different aspects. Tiy posted weapons will be split up into "various classes such as Rocket Launchers, Pistols, Assault rifles, etc." These different classes will have their own range of stats that will govern how useful a weapon is. Mentioned stats include clip size, reload time, bullet spread, fire rate and damage per shot. These stats will be analyzed to provide the weapon with a overall level. Weapons will also have a rarity level which will range from common to super rare. The rarity level of a weapon will determine what types of weapon mods can be put on it. Weapon mods will completely change the functionality of a weapon.

Research

You will be able to open a research lab on your space station that leads to a tech tree. This will be important for a variety of weapons, from small ranged weapons to mech suits.
You will be able to use any weapons that you find from enemy drops, but to create ammo you will have to do research. This enables certain weapons to be placed at key locations for missions and set pieces.

Types of Weapons

Melee
Ranged
It has been confirmed that there will be melee and ranged weapons in game. There will also be energy weapons as well as traditional ballistic weapons. The ballistic weapons will use traditional ammo while energy weapons will use a players energy pool as fuel.

One & Two Handed

Weapons will come in one and two handed varieties. When you equip two weapons, the left mouse button activates one, the right mouse button activates the other. You will be able to use multiple weapons in combination.
